Our fight is driven by the objective to build lasting progressive political power. As a result, CPA leans on its tenacious membership base to hold elected officials accountable, mobilize voters, and promote justice for all people.

Beyond the many proactive campaigns that CPA launches throughout the year, it also serves its membership by developing community leaders to serve them throughout the municipal, state, and national arenas.

2021 City Council Elections

The last thing we need right now are politicians who put profits over the health of our people and our planet. Just like in Washington, elected officials in our own backyard are misusing their power to serve wealthy special interests while leaving the rest of us behind. In 2021 we came together to make our communities places where our families can thrive, not just survive. With a slate of directly impacted community members running for office, CPA sought to build governing power in Aurora and Commerce City. When we build the power of the multi-racial working class, we can win living wages, immigrant rights, and clean air and water.

AURORA

We put up a fight in Aurora! Our efforts to win a progressive a majority in Aurora was met by millions from our opposition. Despite this our grassroots movement was able to deliver a victory for Crystal Murillo re-elected to Ward 1 and Ruben Medina who ran in Ward 3.

In 2021, we attempted to reach 35,800 voters in Aurora! Much like in 2020, our 2021 field program heavily centered on deep canvassing, described as “candid conversations between canvassers and voters in which participants reflect on the experiences that shape what’s at stake for them.” We had 2,334 deep canvassing conversations at the doors to engage voters in CPA’s work for racial, climate, economic, and immigrant justice and to ensure they voted. We reached voters via door-to-door canvassing, phone, digital, and mail!

“When we’re deep canvassing we’re showing sympathy and sparking people’s curiosity in city council elections to show that, despite common belief, they aren’t boring elections. They are extremely important and can be life-changing for people as city councils hold a lot of power,” Zachary Rodriguez, a canvasser with CPA shared.

He continues “Through deep canvassing I got to help a person with a felony record learn they could actually vote and was able to help restore a fundamental right. I was able to educate a person so disenfranchised that they have been throwing away their ballot every election after 2016.”

COMMERCE
CITY

This was the first year CPA endorsed candidates for Commerce City Council! We backed an all-women slate of mothers, grandmothers, and activists who know first hand what it is like living with corporate polluters in their own backyards poisoning their air and water. They ran for office to put their families and neighbors first! CPA was able to build on the ground work they had been setting for years and deliver a victory for Kristi Douglas in the at-large race.

Embracing deep canvassing, we were able to have 733 deep canvass conversations at the doors as we attempted to reach 11,286 voters.

WHY ARE WE IN AURORA?

Colorado People’s Action members are continuing to build power in Aurora to shift business as usual politics and flip the council from corporate greed to community control. After years of investment in Aurora, electing 3 members to the city council in 2017, we are excited to endorse 5 members running for the Aurora City Council this year – we have a member running for each of the open seats in council including the Mayor’s seat. CPA members are doing the groundwork to build governing power in Aurora.

Through endorsing bold progressive candidates, building relationships in our community, knocking on doors to engage Aurora neighbors and voters, we can win in November. We defeat business as usual politicians and replace them with leaders that will fight for us, and we will win in one of the most diverse cities in Colorado and the country.

If you are interested in getting involved in our work to build power in Aurora and elect our members into office please contact Ananiya at

Meet Omar Montgomery

Candidate for Aurora Mayor

“As Mayor I will first look to the roots of systematic oppression for low income communities and support policies to change them.” - Omar

Meet Bryan Lindstrom

Candidate for Aurora City Council, Ward 6

“I am running because I have lived in Aurora my entire life. I went to school here, I own my home here, and I teach here. I am exhausted from watching our community be sold out to big money interests.” - Bryan

Meet Juan Marcano

Candidate for Aurora City Council, Ward 4

“I decided to run for city council because I believe that our city should work for working-class people and not the special interests that fund their campaigns.”- Juan

Meet Alison Coombs

Candidate for Aurora City Council, Ward 5

“I am running because I know that Aurora deserves people-centered, people-driven government. In Aurora, our strength is in our diversity, so having all voices heard will allow us to address issues with growth, including housing, infrastructure, and environmental protection. I am committed to servant leadership and co-governing, and would make that a central part of my efforts as a council member.” Alison

Meet Leanne Wheeler

Candidate for Aurora City Council, At-Large

“My interface with the City of Aurora to move forward with Providence at the Heights, was the impetus for my run…the level of NIMBYism within the City governance structure led to our site plan being denied…I want to be a part of this critical change.” - Leanne

DENVER ELECTIONS 2019

People in Denver set out to create change, and in June 2019, the people’s candidate won her bid for Denver City Council! CPA canvassers, members, and volunteers attempted to engage voters 84,607 times, knocking on 16,266 doors and sending 68,341 texts to move voters to support our values through our endorsed candidate. And when it came down to a run-off election, our members showed up again!

For far too long corporate greed has guided the decisions of current elected leadership in Denver but tonight we move a step closer to changing that. This election proves that when a candidate supports bold progressive policies that the community needs, people turn out to disrupt the status quo.

Big money flooded into the city council race in Denver District 9, now one of the most expensive city council races in Denver history. Candi went up against a quarter million dollars in corporate interests, and WON! This proves that grassroots candidates can win!

CPA member Denis Ngochi shares, “I have been looking for a way to get more involved in a tangible way. Being a Colorado resident for 16 years, and a business owner in Denver wanting to be a part of directing the future of my city, though unable to participate at the ballot box due to my immigrant status, I decided to become a member of CPA so I could still have a voice in this critical election. We need someone in a position of power who will represent all of us and hold corporations and government agencies accountable to the community. I believe Candi is committed to doing that based on her track record. Every elected official should be held accountable for their words and subsequent actions, and I think CPA is a vehicle for my community to hold Candi CdeBaca accountable, to ensure we are at the table to decide our future together.”
